Survey of government finds 1 in 7 Japanese living in poverty

More than one in every seven Japanese people, or 15.7% of the total
population, suffered from poverty in 2007, having to live with less
than half the median national disposable income, the Ministry of Health,
Labor and Welfare survey showed Tuesday.

That rate was the highest in 2007 since 1998, the ministry said in
releasing the figures after calculating existing data for 1998, 2001,
2004 and 2007 in its first attempt.

New tokyo tower

New tokyo tower to become world's tallest

A new tower under construction in Tokyo's Sumida Ward for terrestrial
digital broadcasting, called Tokyo Sky Tree, will be 634 meters high,
making it the world's tallest self-standing broadcasting tower, its
main builder Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co said Friday.

Under the initial plan, the tower was supposed to be 610-meter high,
but the constructors have decided to extend its antenna by 24 meters to
make it taller than a broadcasting tower in Guangzhou, China, which is
under construction.
